You can quickly see your IP address, the country and city of the connection, your internet provider and other available network details. If you use a VPN or a proxy, the address here may belong to that server instead of your original IP.
Websites and online services you visit can see your public IP. It is used to send data between your device and the rest of the network, and it can roughly indicate your location and provider.

This tool shows your public (external) IP — the one websites see. A local (internal) IP lives only inside your Wi-Fi and is listed in the device or router settings. The two numbers are usually different.

A public IP can be used to estimate or look up:
A regular public IP cannot show a person’s exact home address. Geolocation by IP is only approximate, and accuracy depends on the provider and the geolocation database.
A public (external) IP is the address the internet sees. It belongs to your provider or VPN server and is used to talk to websites.
A private (internal, local) IP is used only inside your home or office network — for example 192.168.0.15 behind a Wi-Fi router. Several phones can share one public IP through that router.

IPv4 is het oorspronkelijke en nog steeds meest gebruikte adresformaat. Een IPv4-adres bestaat uit vier groepen getallen van 0 tot 255, gescheiden door punten, bijvoorbeeld 192.168.0.1. A VPN replaces the public IP that websites see with the IP of the VPN server you connect to. Your traffic then goes through an encrypted tunnel.
