Websites and online services you visit can see your public IP. It is used to send data between your device and the rest of the network, and it can roughly indicate your location and provider.
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number given to a device when it goes online. It works like a postal address: without it, websites, messages and video streams would not know where to send the reply.
Your router or mobile network assigns an address so that packets can travel to and from your device. Every time you open a page, the request leaves with that public IP attached.
That is why IP matters for privacy: it is visible to the sites you use, and it can be combined with other signals to guess your region and provider. It is not the same as a street address.

A public IP can be used to estimate or look up:
A regular public IP cannot show a person’s exact home address. Geolocation by IP is only approximate, and accuracy depends on the provider and the geolocation database.
A public (external) IP is the address the internet sees. It belongs to your provider or VPN server and is used to talk to websites.
A private (internal, local) IP is used only inside your home or office network — for example 192.168.0.15 behind a Wi-Fi router. Several phones can share one public IP through that router.

IPv4 is the original and still most common format: four numbers from 0 to 255 separated by dots, for example 192.168.0.1. The 32-bit space is almost used up as more devices come online.
IPv6 is the newer 128-bit format, written as eight groups of hex digits with colons. It provides far more addresses and is often used alongside IPv4. You can have both at once.
